Land Raider Achilles
So Forgeworld have released there latest SM vehicle the Land Raider Achilles, and a lot of talk of is it over powered or underpowered has been splattered all over the internet.
So why am I interested in this, well first of all I’m a resin junkie which doesn’t help, second I’m working on a SM army, not only that its a tanks being released with the Badab war in mind - something I’m also interested in due to the army I’m doing, forth its a siege tank which i have soft spot for, and being a fan of that style of play this tank fits and last of all its new and shiny.
So my initial thoughts when i read the rules were this is a little too expensive compared to the existing LR variants and here is my run down of thoughts that came to that.
Weapons - Below par against a regular LR, too short range and random mix (although not bad)
Transport - Far below and no assault ramp makes this only useful as a gun platform
Durability - Amazing compared to everything but do you really want a 300 point tank that wont die vs. one that is cheaper and more useful overall, I’m not sure.
Having had a few days of thinking about it and discussing it with some of my gaming group my thoughts have not changed. I understand a lot of people are expecting this to just sit on objectives with scouts of something’s inside to make it scoring, but i just think that makes it more expensive and for a tank that needs to move round to be effective i think this tactic is being wasteful.
So what my conclusion, rules wise I like it, on face value I don’t think its 50pts better than a normal LR but it makes up for it in not dying which is nice, I also like the fact that meltas don’t work as hopefully it will encourage people to use less of them and bring lascannons (and not millions of missile launchers) back into there lists. Its a true metagame changer or as much as a FW unit can be depending if there played or not and for that reason I give it a thumbs up.
Hopefully ill pick one up for Christmas and give is some test runs in the new year and do a re-review then.

You realize of couse that several armies will effectively be completely unable to kill it ?
ReplyDeleteyou can just roll it up the table firing , with minimum scouts inside and just park it on an objective at the other side. Orks, Eldar and DE cannot cope with it in the slightest. I love the model , very nice , but the rules are completely WTF , thank god its not tourney legal.
Dark Eldar will struggle but the Voidraven having the 2 St9 Voidlances can do it, Talos in CC can do it. Regualar Eldar have Wraith Guard, Fire Prisms and Wraithlords in CC. Orks will treat it the same as any LR so lots of Nobz charging with power Klaws is still the only answer.
ReplyDeleteI think peoples biggest problem is that the units that are effective are not the most attractive units in their lists so people wont/dont consider them. Part of what i like about it is that fact you have to make harder choices in list making if you play in a enviroment where you are likely to see one of these, if you want to deal with it.
I really want one dude, I just introduced my friends to the ruleset though and they lost their shit.
ReplyDelete'I will not play you if you bring that' Ork Player
'I already have enough of a hard time with your LRC, I will kick you in the nuts if you get that' CSM Player.
I want to get one now just to give them the a reason to whine. Have it roll up the field next to my two other LR's, gentlemen, pick a target.
I was thinking a techmarine and some servitors would go well in the cargo hold of it. Weapon destroyed, immobilised, no worries!!
Oh and another quick note, it's only actually 35pts more than a normal Landraider because you get the bonus of 'extra armour' as standard fit out and everyone I have seen, myself included, always runs extra armour on their LRs.
ReplyDeleteSo it's not a lot more for something of this calibre but Like you said, it is limited in its offensive capability.
Ive never seen EA on a LR before other than on a BT Crusader or in Apoc but different thoughts in different groupes i suppose. I really think it needs some on table time to really get a proper feel for how it performs and in a FW friendly enviroment (which i have) to ensure the opinion isn't bias against it from the get go.
ReplyDeleteForge World have said that the actual rules that will make it to publication have been altered slightly so it may actually not be as 'overpowered' as feared.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, in purely gaming turns the best thing to do against a unit like this is to just ignore it. If you're playing three objectives just concentrate all your forces on the other two.
Where is that statement by FW written?
